Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Viva East 2019)

WOW. Just WOW. I don't even know if this post will be coherent or will be anything other than me gushing over all the amazing ladies I got to meet last weekend at the Viva East Rockabilly Weekender 2019.

Mine Again (Bernie Dexter)

This dress used to be mine. Then it wasn't. And now it is again! Yep, this is another tale of a dress worn years ago when I was a size small then sold when it no longer fit. If you missed my earlier blog post about the importance of body positivity and how buying a dress in a larger size MEANS NOTHING WHATSOEVER, catch it here.

I snagged this on the Buy/Sell/Trade groups recently (even though I have not bought a single dress since April due to the whole buying-a-house thing we're doing) because it was one of my favorites, but also because it was my FIRST vintage repro dress.

Disconnected (Getaway House Boston)

Since March, Cody has been in boot camp to prepare to test for his black belt in Krav Maga. That meant that on top of going to class 2-3 times a week, he also went to a 3 hour boot camp every Friday night, coming home exhausted and drenched in sweat. He had 2 pre-tests this spring and then on June 1, he had his final official black belt test, which lasted over 4 hours and was the most physically and challenging afternoon he has ever conquered. It was challenging to watch as well! Especially the final hour when I knew he was having trouble with his muscles cramping up on him.

Spoonful of Sugar (Anthropologie)

Full disclosure: these photos are not recent! But it seems as though my spending ban has caught up to me and well, I just don't have anything left in queue to share! If all goes well, Cody and I close on our new house at the end of this month so as you can imagine, we're trying not to touch our wallets if we can avoid it for the next few weeks!

The Shift of Summer (My Bubbie's Shift Dress)

Growing up, I always wanted my parents' and grandparents' clothes. The problem was no one ever kept anything! I had a handful of some old band t-shirts from my dad's teenage years but my mother kept nearly nothing from her teenage years.

It is because of this that I struggle to get rid of clothes myself - what if my future daughter wants them? Well, let's hope she wants clothes styled like the 50s and 60s and not the 2010s because I don't dress to the time at all!

In My Happy Place (Happy Place Popup in Boston)

Now that it's getting warmer (though it is doing so very, very, VERY slowly), I can't wait to start taking more day trips and adventures with Cody and our friends. As you may recall from previous posts, we are always down to check out something funky with my girl, Jen, and her husband, Dave.

When I heard that Happy Place was coming to Boston this month, I immediately texted them to see if they'd want to check it out with me. If you've never heard of Happy Place, here's some more information on the fun pop up experience, according to their website.

What's Sara Reading? Forget About It

What are friends for if not buying dresses from each other?

When my boo, Anna, recently decided to sell some of her previously loved Bernie Dexter dresses, I knew she'd probably be getting rid of at least one or two that I am missing from my collection. Lo and behold, she shared her green gingham Kelly dress as one getting the boot and I decided to take it off her hands.

Prom Season (Styling My Prom Dress from 2005)

2005 feels genuinely like a lifetime ago. Does 14 years count as a lifetime? It sure feels like it does! And in honor of it being so long ago and in honor of Prom Season 2019, I decided to pull on the ol' prom dress and style it for the blog!

Autumn Spice & Everything Nice (Tatyana)

Snagging a dress during a sale is just about the most satisfying thing a gal can do - at least, in my book it is! As you may recall, I recently snagged a couple things from Modern Millie's during their Spring Shopping party and took advantage of their fun 20% coupon code.

Modern Millie already had this adorable Tatyana number for a steal of a price ($68) but with 20% off? DROOL WORTHY!

Tally, Ho! (LindyBop)

April showers are wrapping up next week, which means it's time for May flowers and hopefully some beautiful spring weather!

When it comes to pretty spring dresses, I knew I could rely on Lindy Bop to brighten up my wardrobe for warmer weather. So when the opportunity arose for a spring themed collaboration, I jumped at the chance to add this lovely Tally Day dress in the blue daisy print.

Allison, My Aim is True (Heart of Haute)

I have been feeling less and less inclined to reach for the big fluffy petticoats these days. I don't know if my style is simply evolving away from them or I am just in an anti-petticoat phase, but I have been looking for more lovelies that have a less full skirt and can accommodate one of my less crazy petticoats (such as my Zooey Malco Modes, which is not as voluminous as the Samantha) or is shorter in length and doesn't need a petticoat at all.

The BIG Celebration: A Night at the Races

As some of you may know, I have been a Big Sister with Big Brother Big Sister (BBBS) for the last year. It has been a wonderful opportunity to mentor my Little every week (in reality, we get to hang out for an hour, chat, and do fun stuff like make slime or paint/draw) and see her grow and develop.

This past weekend, BBBS held their annual BIG Celebration fundraiser and all their Bigs (mentors) were invited! I never turn down an invitation to get dressed up so I immediately grabbed tickets for Cody and me and planned our outfits.

Pick Up Sticks (Modern Millie's)

Come hither, peanuts, and tell me if you've ever worn or seen Teeberry & Weave before! I hadn't until my favorite retro shop, Modern Millie's, shared this beauty on their social media a few weeks back and I fell in love.

Here's where I fell even MORE in love. Instead of just adding it to my my Love List and waiting for the day it'd go on sale so I could snag it (goal of 2019 and all that jazz), I got to buy it just a mere few days after discovering it!

Donut Stop Me Now (Rocco's Grand Opening)

Ya'll know by now what my true love is - I mean, I hold one IN MY HAND IN MY LOGO FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

For those STILL dumbfounded, I'll fill you in. I love me a good donut (sorry, Cody). And whether you spell it donut or doughnut, it doesn't matter as long as you're handing me a perfect little round cake smothered with yummy things.

What's Sara Reading? Matchmaking for Beginners

Full disclosure, I am STILL reading "Matchmaking for Beginners" by Maddie Dawson, but considering this series is called What's Sara READING and not What Has Sara READ, I think I can get away with it this time.

I am a little more than halfway through with a lot to discover but I love it so far. It's got a little bit of magic to it but not in a "ohhh I'm reading a fantasy novel" way at all. Dawson has managed to weave it into the story without it being overly cliche or cheesy.

In the Kitchen Redux + Body Positivity (Bernie Dexter)

This post will be a bit different. Sure, I am sharing a Bernie Dexter dress that I recently scored at discount on the Bernie Dexter Collective on Facebook, but I wanted to share it to discuss something I feel very strongly about - body positivity.

What does this precious dress have to do with body positivity (BOPO)? Well, some may recognize it and may be wondering "don't you have this dress already, Sara? Haven't we seen this before many times?"

Cranberry Orange Muffins (Vegan)

Growing up, I used to LOVE cranberry orange muffins. I loved the tart and sweet combo and the fruitiness of them. Whenever we'd get muffins from Dunkin Donuts or as a treat when we'd go food shopping, I always opted for a cranberry orange muffin over the more popular chocolate chip or blueberry.

Swaying in the Breeze (Collectif Janet Leafy Swing Dress)

You never know what you'll find when Collectif throws their huge 50% off sale. Part of you doesn't want to look (the sensible part) but you know you'll just regret it later. And of course you'd regret it because at half off, you can stock up on all your favorite Collectif from the season.

Vintage Ruby Red Coat (Rogers in the Square)

Every so often, you stumble upon a vintage item without planning to and find a gem.

This coat, for example. This ruby red, beautiful vintage coat made by Rogers in the Square, is quite the gem!

What's Sara Reading? Under Rose Tinted Skies

Once in awhile, I divulge in a Young Adult book. I've always loved YA more than adult fiction and have shared quite a few here in my "What's Sara Reading?" series. It's always fun to grab a new YA to break up what can feel like the dry monotonous world of adult fiction (anyone else out there feel me?).

Speaking of, look at me sharing ANOTHER book review and inspired outfit just one month after the previous? I am off to a good start...

Chocolate Chip Raspberry Valentine's Day Cookies

It's the most decadent time of the year! You might have heard the best time for sweets is Christmas or Easter but YA HEARD WRONG, MARTHA!

Valentine's Day is where it's at and now that it's February, I am kicking off my Valentine's Cheer. As I have always done, I am bringing you some Valentine's inspired outfits but sneaking in some goodies because WHAT ELSE WOULD I DO?

Warm & Fuzzy (Asos)

Ya'll know by now that I love scoring beautiful things at awesome prices - it's why I often share how I find items in Buy/Sell/Trade groups on Facebook. Retro gals all over the globe selling items that either don't fit properly or have been worn but are in excellent condition?! Yes please!

You know what they say: another gal's discarded beauty is another's treasure...

What's Sara Reading? Goodbye, Sweet Girl (Tatyana)

What is this? A book inspired outfit post? Whaaaaaaat?

Yeah, I know, it has been A MINUTE since I shared one (my last one was, oh boy, May of last year!) but as I was chatting with Kristina from Eyre Effect in her comment section recently, I decided I needed to bring back the book reviews. After all, when In a Nutshell came to be, the blog was supposed to focus on style, books, and recipes - my world, in a nutshell (BOOM! Get it?).

Simply the Best: 2018 in a Nutshell

'Tis the season for bloggers to recap 2018! I love sharing these posts every year. For one, it's interesting and fun to look at my stats and see what posts were the most engaging and clearly the favorite month to month.

Sometimes, as a content creator, we get so amped for a post and think "oh this is gonna be a hit..." only for it to do just OK. Then other times, we're feeling meh about a post or photos and it gets more comments and views than any other post that year. Content creation is funny, folks!

I was also told last year by a reader that these recaps are the best for new readers - they get to see the highlights of the blog from the entire year and bring them up to speed if they've only been following for the later part of the year. I never considered that but love that these posts are beneficial for some! In the past, I've shared my personal favorites but last year I opted to share the ones that performed best each month and that was equally as fun! So I decided to keep it going for this year's post. So without further ado, let's review 2018 (and oh what a year it was!).

The Phoenix (Voodoo Vixen)

Do you have re-occurring dreams? Or re-occurring dream themes?

I definitely do! I used to think it was anxiety caused but mine occurs randomly in recent years so it's hard to tell for sure.
