Poor Unfortunate Souls (Small Victories Handmade)

Hello my fellow poor unfortunate souls! I am so excited to be sharing this outfit, the beautiful brooch in particular!

This wickedly amazing Ursula brooch hit Small Victories Handmade's shop this weekend and it frankly couldn't be more of a bad ass design! I even decided to brave our April Fool's Day snowstorm to get some icy and snowy photos to match Ursula's cruel cold heart.

Funny enough, only a mere 18 hours or so after these photos were taken, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful out - no snow in sight. You gotta love New England weather. The way the weather can change here is just crazy. I wouldn't believe it myself if I didn't live here all my life.

Hannah from Small Victories Handmade sent me her latest design with an order I placed just before my latest work trip, not saying a peep about what the design was. I couldn't wait to get home and open up the package. When I finally got home and finally got to tear it open, I may have let out an Ursula-esque cackle upon seeing how viciously gorgeous it was. Yessssssssss! No lie, she is my absolute favorite Disney villain! Needless to say, I was PUMPED!

I had also conveniently ordered this LindyBop tulle skirt after seeing CiCi Marie rocking it on her blog and, I kid you not, it arrived the same day as Ursula did. There they were, the two packages all cuddled up together in my mailbox.

It was totally fate. Worn with this purple Sabrina top from Pinup Girl Clothing and my oh-so-reliable sparkly BAIT Footwear Haku boots, it's the perfect Ursula look. The skirt is so perfectly inky, dark, and gauzy like the deepest part of the ocean where Ursula and her eel sidekicks reside and the purple ruffles of this vintage petticoat so remind me of her tentacle-icious bottom half.

While Ursula is truly a villain in every sense in The Little Mermaid, she was definitely one of my favorite characters when I was young. I always found Ariel to be quite naive and, frankly, downright stupid.  I always loved how effortless it was for Ursula to trick her into signing her evil contract.

Ursula is quite the Girl Boss when you think about it. I mean, sure, she's 100% evil and her motivation comes from trickery and theft, but come on, she knows what she wants and takes it - all with impeccable red lips. You gotta respect the woman.

Though, I must admit, now that I am an adult (I mean, am I really?!), I look at the lyrics of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" and twitch at their realness - even after all these years since it was written. Have you listened closely lately?

The men up there don't like a lot of blabber
They think a girl who gossips is a bore
Yet on land it's much preferred for ladies not to say a word
And after all dear, what is idle babble for?
Come on, they're not all that impressed with conversation
True gentlemen avoid it when they can
But they dote and swoon and fawn
On a lady who's withdrawn
It's she who holds her tongue who gets a man

Oh boy, does that verse above reign true to today's world. I hate to say it - but it's still true! Ugh! Pardon me while I puke!

This was always my downfall in my dating years. I had no problem being up front about liking guys (to which many ran away - some LITERALLY). I also was not a quiet little mouse. I am loud, I talk fast, I say what I mean, I speak honestly, and frankly, it sometimes alarms people, scares people off, and gives me the reputation for being a bitch.

But I won't be sorry. And neither should you.

Like Ursula, I know what I want. I am not afraid to do what it takes to get what I want. Yeah, so Ursula's goals and mine don't TOTALLY line up, but when it comes to in-your-face confidence, I match hers. Yeah, I got that.

And now I've got a brooch to match!
